The Gilded Age
The term “Gilded Age” was coined by Mark Twain. The word gilded means covered in a thin layer of gold. Gilded described the late 1800’s perfectly. It appeared as America was thriving, mostly because of its rapid economic growth. Underneath all this stood the ugly truth of what was really going on. Poverty was at an all time high, monopolies were being created, and government was corrupt.
